Flights
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is the main international airport with flights from all over the world. Don Mueang Airport (DMK) is the smaller airport handling mainly domestic flights and international flights from certain Southeast Asian countries.
Guests from the USA: While direct flight routes between Thailand and the U.S. have been unavailable for a decade, the FAA has recently allowed Thai Airways to resume them - however, we do not know when this will happen. For guests from the West Coast it may be best to transit through either Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, or Taipei. For guests from the East Coast going eastward or westward doesn’t make a huge difference. Tanya typically flies with EVA Airways through Taipei, but some other good options include Turkish Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar.
Guests from other Countries: If there aren’t direct flights from your closest international airport, there should be many options via Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi.
Local Transport
Download the ‘Grab’ app from the App Store / Google Play before your trip. This is going to be your Uber/Lyft in Thailand and it’s pretty straightforward to use.
We recommend using this to get around Bangkok during your trip as you can select various cars depending on your needs. If you don’t intend on using the shuttles that we will organize, or miss it on the day (it’s ok! it happens), Grab will be your best friend.
TIPS
Traffic: Bangkok is notorious for awful traffic. To be on the safe side, try to add 15-30 minutes to the transit time suggested by Google Maps, especially during rush hour (7-11am & 4-9pm). The good news is…historically traffic decreases significantly during the few days after New Year’s celebrations, so we’re hoping that the roads will be somewhat clear on the 2nd & 3rd.
BTS (SkyTrain) & MRT (underground train): This is the fastest way to get around central Bangkok. It’s great if you want to explore many different areas of the city and want to avoid traffic. There’s a high chance you will have to take another mode of transport to your final destination (unless it’s a Mall, then they’re usually connected!).
